The galgo — Spain’s native greyhound — is one of the most common rescue dogs in Andalusia. Thousands need homes every year. At El Arca de Cuevas in Cuevas de San Marcos, Málaga (Andalusia), we care for galgos and galgo mixes and help families adopt in Spain and abroad.
What is a galgo?
The galgo español is a sighthound bred for hunting and coursing. Slender, fast and gentle, galgos are often confused with greyhounds but are a distinct Spanish breed. Many shelter dogs are galgo crosses with podenco or other breeds.
Why adopt a galgo from Spain?
Galgos are calm indoors, affectionate with people and usually good on the lead once settled. Adopting from a Spanish shelter gives a second chance to dogs who may otherwise face difficult futures. We assess each dog and can advise on travel and paperwork for adopters in the EU and beyond.
What to expect
Galgos often need a quiet adjustment period and a soft bed — they love comfort. Most are medium-sized (around 25–30 kg). We share each dog’s history, behaviour with other animals and any medical needs before adoption.

Are galgos good family dogs?
Many galgos are gentle and calm at home. We always match each dog to the right household and explain behaviour with children and other pets.
How much exercise does a galgo need?
A daily walk and safe off-lead time in a secure area is usually enough. Galgos are sprinters, not endless runners.
