Podencos are ancient Spanish hunting hounds — intelligent, loyal and full of character. In rural Andalusia they are among the most common dogs in shelters. At El Arca de Cuevas in Cuevas de San Marcos, Málaga (Andalusia) we regularly have podencos and podenco mixes ready for adoption.
About the podenco
Podenco is a group of related hound breeds found across Spain and the islands — including Canarian, Andalusian and Ibizan types. They are agile, alert and bond strongly with their people. Sizes and coats vary from small wire-haired dogs to larger smooth-coated hounds.
Living with a podenco
Podencos are active and curious; they enjoy walks, sniffing and mental stimulation. Many are good with other dogs. With patience and positive training they adapt well to family life in town or country.

Is a podenco the same as an Ibizan hound?
The Ibizan hound (podenco ibicenco) is one type of podenco. Our shelter dogs are often mixed; we label each profile clearly.
Do podencos need a lot of space?
They appreciate outdoor exercise but many live happily in homes with regular walks and enrichment.
Can podencos live with cats?
It depends on the individual dog. We note cat compatibility on each profile when known.
